Ching Ching was taken into the AKC show ring last year and was excused because of her brindle color/markings even though there were no disqualifying colors in the standard at the time.

Members of the national club were so distressed that brindle Pugs might be shown that they pushed a standard change which even removed the silver and apricot-fawn designations. The revision states that only fawn or black pugs are allowed to be shown - all other colors are disqualified.

There is still some discussion about whether brindle should be referred to as a color or markings. The standard states that fawns should have a clearly demarcated black trace, mask and ears. On the first weekend after the change went into effect - two AKC judges disqualified eight fawn Pugs based on their markings (lack of trace, guard hairs or smuttiness). This too has caused a great deal of hysteria among PDCA members.

The Pug Dog Club of America's official position on all mix breed dogs is that they should be euthanized (New York Times Sunday Magazine - Feb. 4, 2007 - The Modern Kennel Conundrum by Jon Mooallem:

These are not "designer pug like dogs" they are 100% pure AKC Registered Pugs. The Brindle Pug is as pure as the fawn and black and the Metamorphhix DNA test certainly supports the assertion.
